FROM DREAMING TO DOING
Discovering Myself and Finding Home in the Vibrant Heart of London

Wednesday, July 19th, 2023

Coming to London has always been a dream of mine. This city has forever held a special place in my heart, igniting an indescribable passion within me from the moment I first set foot on its wonderful streets. I completely fell in love with it.

The charm of this magnificent metropolis captivated my senses, unveiling a world of boundless opportunities and deep wonders. Every corner holds the promise of a new adventure, an unexplored avenue of discovery, where the old gracefully intertwines with the new.

It exudes an incredible amount of life and offers a rich diversity of cultures. There are moments when you're walking up the stairs in the underground, or just moving through the streets of London, and suddenly, there's a profound silence, allowing you to hear nothing but the collective footsteps of countless individuals going about their own business. This awe-inspiring sight serves as a humbling reminder of our smallness in the world, where millions of people pursue their own lives, dreams, fears, and challenges.

Back in 2016, I had the opportunity to come here for six months through the Erasmus program, which allows students to spend a semester abroad. Initially, I had planned to go to Spain with some friends, but as fate would have it, circumstances changed, and I made a last-minute decision to embark on this journey to London by myself. Fortunately, my sister was already living here at the time, which made the whole experience even more gratifying. As I often say, she opened the doors of this country for me.

Months passed, and I returned to Portugal, where things were going quite well. I completed my bachelor's degree, got accepted at ESAD to pursue a master's degree in interior design, and even landed my first job as an interior designer in a dream studio by the Douro River in Porto. However, there came a moment in my life that forced me to question everything about myself and the direction I was heading. It was during this introspective phase that my sister asked a crucial question: "Why don't you come to London? What's stopping you now?" Those words ignited a fire within me, reaffirming what I had always known deep down. Without a moment of hesitation, I left everything behind—my job, my friends, my family, and my country—to pursue my dream career abroad and make London my new home. Looking back now, I realise that this was the best decision I could have made.

That first year didn't start off smoothly, presenting me with various challenges. I found myself in a not very good place, yet paradoxically, it proved to be an incredibly rewarding period of my life. It became a transformative year during which I discovered profound aspects of my own being.

Coming to London in the beginning felt like an extended holiday. I had the opportunity to travel a lot and meet extraordinary people, some of whom are still part of my life to this day. Although the beginning may have been tough, I had a strong belief that everything would be okay, and I placed my trust in the journey. I have never felt as free and in tune with myself as I did during those moments.

As a wise friend told me at the time, "Quem muda Deus ajuda" (God helps those who want to change), and "Mudar é sempre para melhor" (Change is always for the better). I hold these words within me ever since, and looking back, I have no regrets. Placing my trust in the journey, I ventured to London, and now I firmly believe that I am precisely where I am meant to be.

Stay tuned for the next journal post, as there is much more to come.
